How to Keep Basil Herbs Fresh

How Do You Keep Your Basil Fresh?

It's actually pretty simple to keep basil fresh, just follow these steps:

  • Trim and Clean: Trim the stems of your basil and remove any yellowed or damaged leaves. Give them a gentle rinse under cold water to remove any dirt.

  • Dry Thoroughly: Pat the basil leaves dry using a paper towel or a clean kitchen towel. Excess moisture can lead to wilting and decay, so make sure the leaves are dry before storage.

  • Store at Room Temperature: Unlike some herbs, basil prefers to be stored at room temperature. Place the basil stems in a glass or vase with enough water to cover the ends of the stems, like a bouquet of flowers.

  • Cover with a Plastic Bag: To create a mini greenhouse effect, cover the basil loosely with a plastic bag. This helps retain moisture and maintains a more humid environment, keeping the basil fresh for a longer time.

  • Change Water Regularly: If storing basil in water, change the water every few days to prevent it from becoming stagnant. Trim the stems slightly each time to encourage water absorption.

Alternatively, you can store basil in the refrigerator, but it's crucial to keep it away from extreme cold, as basil is sensitive to temperatures below 40°F (4°C).

If refrigerating, wrap the basil loosely in a damp paper towel and place it in a plastic bag, leaving it partially open to allow some air circulation. This method works well for short-term storage. Remember, using basil relatively quickly will ensure the best flavor and aroma.
